Mata Punjab Kaur

Shri Guru Ram Rai Ji Maharaj left for his heavenly abode in the year 1687 and the work of the Darbar Sahib was then managed by his widow Mata Punjab Kaur. In those days women were forbidden to occupy the seat (Gaddi) of a religious sect or a Mahant, hence she carried on the work with the help of an experienced assistant and devotee of the Darbar Sahib, Shri Aud Das Ji, and the chief employee, Shri Har Prasad Ji. Shri Aud Das Ji was declared as the first Shri Mahant. He had earlier worked under the guidance of Shri Guru Ram Rai Ji and he had gained a lot of experience. It will be appropriate to recount that Mata Punjab Kaur was born in village Pipli, Nangal Ambia, Distt. Jalandar (Punjab) and possessed some miraculous powers. It is said that in her childhood, Mata Punjab Kaur dangled in the swing made of raw threads and that when she went to fetch water, the pitcher did not touch her head but hung over in the air. There is a temple (dera) of Mata Punjab Kaur at Nangal Ambia even today. The pictures depicting Mata Punjab Kaur in a swing and bringing water in a pitcher hanging in the air are painted on the walls of the temple.
