About Darbar Sahib

The construction of the existing building of the Darbar Sahib was completed about twenty years after Shri Guru Ram Rai Ji departed for his heavenly abode. Mata Punjab Kaur's contribution to this project was indefatigable. The embedding of marble was initiated by the eighth Shri Mahant Laxman Dass Ji and was completed by his disciple and the ninth Shri Mahant Indiresh Charan Dass Ji. Shri Mahant Devendra Dass Ji the present Mahant Ji has restored repaired and beautified the Darbar Sahib. The old walls have been repaired and white-washed. The new "Kalashes" (metal spires) have been fitted on the domes and tops of the Gurudwara and Temples, the "Sarovar" (the large pond) has been renovated with high grills around it and railings have been attached to the Jhanda Ji.

Every possible attempt is being made to protect the Mughal, Rajasthani and Kangra style of mural paintings. The Darbar Sahib is situated between the fort like high walls and the minarets. Its western gate is a specimen of the Mughal and Rajasthani style of architecture. There is a staircase along with a raised platform in front of it, which is made of marble. In the centre of it, there is a place for flag mast. There are portraits of gods, goddesses, saints, sages and religious stories on the walls. There are pictures of flowers and leaves, animals and birds, trees, similar faces with pointed noses and big eyes on the arches which are the symbol of the colour scheme of Kangra-Guler and Mughal art. High minarets and round pinnacles are the models of the Muslim architecture. The huge Talab in the front measuring 230 x 80 feet which had dried up for want of water over the years and in which people had been dumping rubbish, has now been renovated and revived. Now whoever pays a visit to the Darbar Sahib would definitely notice this change.
